I know this is useless trivia, but I did find it interesting nonetheless.
The character of Catherine was based on Helen Hessel; that of Jules was based on her husband. This has been acknowledged by everyone involved including Roche, Truffaut and H.H. herself. Roche may have added a few details from other women he knew to complete the portrait, but essentially he was writing about H.H. By the way, he was a notorious womanizer, (in today's jargon a "sexual predator" or a "sex addict"), and a number of women have claimed to have "inspired" him more than they probably have the right to.
