Burning the Lies (possible spoilers)
Can someone tell me the significance of this? I noticed the two fires in the movie were when she was burning that, and then when she herself was being cremated, just can't put the two together.

shareMy exegesis is that its evidence Catherine can never escape the past or the truth by eradicating the evidence. Take for example Jules' comment towards the end of the film, something like 'oh so they're burning books now,' meaning the Nazi's book burning. The knowledge in those books is still in the memories of the people that had read them; Catherine would have eternally gone between Jules and Jim because she can't eradicate the feelings she once had for them both.
What the 'lies' are I'm not sure it's important. Perhaps a past love that ended tragically; Catherine is more than a little unhinged, perhaps this was the cause of that. Pure speculation but I hope this helped...
It did very much so, thank you for the analysis
shareIt is said "if they burn books they will burn people".
So, the scene where Nazis are burning books hints that later in the film people also will be burnt - and that happened with Catherine and Jim.
