Emotions

People who hate this movie because they hate the characters is comical to me. You let the characters control you like the woman does the men and you are as helpless and controlled as if you knew her personally instead of observed her as an audience. I'm sure you would make terrific psychologists.

I agree. I remember telling someone here at imdb who gutted Anton Corbijn's Control (no pun intended) and felt Curtis (Sam Riley) was a mashed-up, unlikeable pretentious rat that he "would no doubt brand Jules and Jim as emo trash". Some people just don't get a movie where the male lead/s is/are portrayed as vulnerable and even ambiguous.

yes its quite sad some of the things I see in these forums sometimes. People hate what they don't understand, like children. Stop looking too much into the movie! The movie is written and structured to equal the spontaneity of life, thats the most beautiful thing of all; and yes Jeanne Moreau played an imperfect character, to say the least. Just the dialogue alone is worth the watch of this movie.

I think after reading some of the (ahem) criticism I love this movie even more. It's helped me into a deeper understanding of its themes. People are honestly saying they don't like Jules et Jim because the characters are not perfect people! Woah, that's life!!

No wonder movies are in such a sorry state with this kind of predominant attitude. Can we clone Truffaut please?

reply

I love how Francois Truffaut just let Catherine be who she was; he didn't try to psychoanalyze her or bring in an unnecessary psychiatrist. He just let her be the free, flawed, complex and at times frustratingly ambiguous but completely alive woman; it shows that he really loved Catherine as a character and is a prime example of his warmth and humanity as a filmmaker/auteur.

I agree, and part of the secret is, I guess, that he made Moreau try some of her own secret dreans and aspirations through Catherine during filming. To her, on the shoot, Catherine must have felt a bit bigger than life but at the same time very close to a side of herself.
