Hated it!! But please read.....

I'd like to issue this caveat first: I am not, nor do I like people that post just to flame on a film.

That said, I love Criterion's DVDs, they are usually a good bet as far as choices go. I also love French cinema and enjoy Truffaut's other work(Tirez sur le pianiste (1960) in particular.. But this film left me cold. While I love Jeanne Moreau, I couldn't stand her in this. I found her totally greedy and selfish. While I understand that the story hinges on her indecisive nature, it made me dislike her, and in turn the film as well.
So to you that love it, what's the appeal?

One word: Photography.

I just have to ask since i also thought the photography was nothing short of amzing. But when the happiness dissapers from the movie it seems like it becomes...less amazing. Just me?

reply

No it's not just you, the film becomes sad in the 2nd half and there aren't as many unique shots taken.
The 1st half is amazing work and I love the photography of it, the 2nd half is quite different though.

Overall I don't think it should be lauded as the greatest film ever, I also think 400 Blows is better and also far more accessible, which I think is very important to films.

Still, Traffaut's photography is brilliant enough for me to give it about 7.5

There is a great deal more than meets the eye at first.

Like a jigsaw puzzle you can spread out the pieces and start assembling. Then when the real picture starts becoming recognizable it is rather overwhelming. It's a real testimony to friendship and brings us to question what the nature of mankind's reality really is...

And it makes a rather bold statement afterwards when you realize that there can exist an entire reality before our very eyes while we see nothing!

Lot's of big questions to tackle, lot's of good stuff. Would you like a few puzzle pieces to begin?

Look where no one else is looking and you will see what no else sees.

reply

yes, i would like a few puzzle pieces to begin with.

I love Catherine's character. Somehow it reminds me Scarlett from Gone with The Wind. Full of life, strong character, wilfull, beautiful, selfish, spoiled, trying to love (and understand love), but always far from succeding at it. She destroys herself and the ones around her. Deadly charming.

plus, see Bonnie and Clyde and try to look for similarities in its style.

It had beautiful composition, and, in every sense is a classic part of the French new wave. It wasn't brilliant or anything, but a solid 8/10.

Last film seen: Koko: A Talking Gorilla 7/10

Completelly crazy, completelly fast (as fast can be, and beyond...), completelly Truffault at the early years, totally bohemian, completelly NOUVELLE VAGUE!!! What more can I say... Jeanne Moreau! Jeanne Moreau is amazing in this film!

Arnaldo Jabor, a brazilian film maker, film enthusiast, journalist, writer, critic, talkshow host,... (yes, he has/have had many jobs! hehe), once said: "There will never be another love film like this one."
That sentence is on the back cover of my copy of this movie.
You guys´ thoughts on that?
