Am I the only person to think this film is overated?

I saw it the other day in the cinema, expecting this great film, but just found it really annoying and not very interesting either.

Maybe I just don't like Jeanne Moreau....or I don't like 'New Wave' that much.

Anyone else found this film overated? Seriously, Silken Skin is better imo.

I wasn't blown away by it but I appreciated it. In my opinion there are much better films from the new wave.

I'm with you, and I love the New wave. This one though didn't do it. The ONLY scene I liked was the one with that girl doing the "locomotive" thing with her cigar. I also agree that The Soft skin was better.

You've to watch this movie for a few times, in order to fully appreciate it's immense values. "Jules and Jim" belongs to the movies you can't "read" with a first viewing.

It's a disspiriting film but there is truth in it. I think it appeals most to those who appreciate and 'have time for' the confusion of its characters, and what brought that confusion on. As with all 'movements' of film, the 'New Wave' brought together very different people who, for a short period of time, appeared to have something in common mainly because their films are so different to the films which came before. However, in retrospect, all directors and films within the 'New Wave' need to be taken on their individual merits as they may have less in common with each other than we have assumed. My favourite Truffaut is the short, "Antoine et Collette". And my favourite new wave feature would be "Une Femme Est Une Femme" which only reveals itself fully after a few viewings.

I'll grant the film probably made an impact when released in 1962. Some of the camera work is novel for the time, and the film has a breezy attitude that probably felt sophisticated when put up against John Wayne and Jerry Lewis films.

Nonetheless it didn't register for me either. I got the friendship of Jules and Jim, I forgave the we-have-careers-without-ever-seeming-to-work vibe. But too much of it never rang true. The two of them went to fight for opposing sides in WW1 and merely hoped never to have to shoot each other? Jules loves Catherine, but it's okay if Jim can hang around for her to flirt with? Truffat did much better with plainly observed behavior in "Day For Night" and "Small Change."

I thought I was going to explode while I waiting for this film to GRAB me...

I may see it again...in about 10 or 20 years...

It's rated just fine, not overrated and not underrated. Premiere magazine made a stupid list of their 20 most overrated movies of all time. Which is quite a dumb move. Jules and Jim isn't even widely seen. La Dolce Vita is certainly more overrated and a lot of people have watched it. Anyway Premiere magazine is run by idiots who ranked Renee Falconetti's only performance over Al Pacino's in DDA and Tom Hanks in Big.

"400 Blows" is way better.

"Jules and Jim" is way better.

My explanation:

The "400 Blows" was dedicated to Monsieur Truffault's own persona.

In "Jules and Jim" Truffault shared his observations and thoughts on another people, thus showing his own exceptional wisdom and talent.
