The author of the novel Walter Tevis says Eddie won $15,000 from Fats that last match. Bert demanded $4,500 of it.

Only 15k? That seems little, I thought it would be at least 30k. Fats didn't quit when he was down 18k the first time. So does it mean he simply realised that Eddie has no more weaknesses and couldn't be beat?

reply

Yes. The writing was on the wall. He clearly tries to shake Eddie in that match, but to no avail. Eddie's talented enough to beat Fats, and if he's able to stay focused on that it was no contest. Eddie was talented enough the first time around as well, but his lack of "character" as Burt puts it, trips him up. As Eddie tells Burt in the second match, "I sure got character now." Once all of Fats's tricks failed, and he'd given Eddie his best game, only to fall well behind, it was time to quit.
