Supporting actors (few lines)

I thought Jackie Gleason was great in this. I think he had about 12 lines but came close to stealing the film. The only time I recall a similar feat, was Jack Palance in Shane. Can anyone think of any other small part supporters who came close? Btw, both mentioned were nominated for Oscars but lost out. In Palance's case it was against Sinatra in From here to eternity, but that was quite a big role.Gleason lost to George Chakiris in West Side Story, and that swept the boards.

I agree Gleason was great. He gave a great performance with minimal but great dialogue. All in the eyes, mannerisms and charisma. Simply great and deserving of his Oscar nomination.
