What were the "guns?"

Where they navy guns (15 inchers?) mounted on large gun carriages? Most land armies did not have artillery that large except for railroad "superguns" and the Germans did now allow those to leave the Fatherland.

Well obviously in a fictional movie the Germans were more than happy for them to leave the Fatherland. Jeez!

For the film they made the guns much more formidable than in the book. In the film they were these huge naval guns, and radar directed to boot. In the book, they were much smaller; they were dangerous because they were so high up (gave them great range), and commanded a fairly narrow straight that they could hit almost anything in that came through. For the types of ships in that part of the Med in the war (destroyers and smaller), the guns were perfectly fine...especially since they couldn't be reached or attacked easily.

There were 16-inch guns, much like those shown in the movie, built along the California coast and other places in the 1920s, 1930s, and 1940s. They were mounted inside massive concrete emplacements.
