Now it all makes sense
You could tell in the couple of scenes she was in that the little girl really adored John Wayne and she wasn't just acting. And now I see in the credits that she was his real life daughter !

The character Pilar was the name of Wayne's wife at the time (mother of the little girl mentioned in the first posting), Melinda (who he chats with, and always goes back to "mend those fences") is the name of one of his daughters from his first marriage, and Tobe was played by one of Wayne's older sons, Patrick.
