Shame isn't it? I was under the impression he was gonna be around for the rest of the movie. It goes along OK without him though.
What's the Spanish for drunken bum?
But I'll bet some producer saw it and cast him as a similar character in "Cat Ballou" a few years later, for which he won an Oscar, so it worked out okay!
shareMarvin got cast in The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance directly due to this film, with Wayne recommending him to John Ford. His career took off pretty quick from there.
"If life gives you lemons, choke on 'em and die. You stupid lemon eater."
I was expecting Marvin to return at the end.
There is more Gravy about you then the Grave. Scrooge.
I too thought it a bit odd that Marvin's character was killed off so soon. It seemed he was intended to be a major character when introduced.
Interesting role, good performance.
I too thought it a bit odd that Marvin's character was killed off so soon.I agree, but in the context of the film, the whole "Crows" episode goes on too long. He really is ultimately a fairly minor character and it's like time-out from the main 2 sub-stories, whilst the Duke, drinks, eats, fights and plays cards with Crows for what seems like forever. 🐭 share
Good points, and it's as if there may have been the original intention to take the film in a somewhat different direction. Perhaps the Marvin character as originally conceived was intended to be more significant?
Unless one is an "insider" these sort of things can be difficult to determine. It's also possible that the part was more of a "throwaway" just to give Lee Marvin something to do. Those who really like him were probably disappointed that he didn't have more onscreen time.

I was surprised that he was out of the movie so early. I halfway expected him to turn out not to be dead, and to return later.
