Michael Crtiz is one boring director
How he manages to make a movie with John Wayne and a scalped Lee Marvin plod along is beyond me.

I'd argue that Casablanca is a great movie because of the screenplay written by the Epistein's and the performances...not because of the direction.
A bad or even mediocre director can turn the best screenplays into crap. Curtiz was one of Hollywood's premiere filmmakers. I must confess you are the first person I've ever encountered anywhere who has little or no respect for Curtiz as a cinematic craftsman. Curtiz was certainly a difficult man to work for, according to many of the actors, stuntmen, extras and other film crew who were subjected to his directorial tyranny; but the end result was usually good if not excellent which is what every filmmaker worth his or her salt strives to achieve.
As for THE COMANCHEROS, I enjoyed it, consider it among John Wayne's better movies; superb musical score and beautiful panoramic, on-location cinematography.
And by the way, this was Curtiz's final picture, succumbing to cancer not long after its release. In fact, John Wayne himself took up much of the directorial chores for the ailing Curtiz and if the film has its shortcomings {which I've seen none to speak of) then Wayne shares at least some of the blame.
