Karen Wright and Martha Dobie, two best friends from college, are headmistresses of a girls' school. In the beginning, one sees that the school is doing well. It starts off with all the visitors of the students having a party. However, Mary Tilford, who lives with her grandmother, is a vicious, wicked girl who lies and causes trouble and bullies the other girls. One day, Karen punishes her for lying and Mary becomes vindicative. At the same time, Karen is engaged to be married to Dr. Joseph Carton, Mary's grandmother's nephew, and Martha is jealous as her Aunt Lily Mortar accuses her of. While Martha and her aunt are yelling at each other about Martha's jealousy, Evelyn and Peggy, Mary's two roommates overhear them and tell Mary what they heard and thus, Mary, tells her grandmother lies about Martha and Karen being lesbians, although the word "lesbian" is NOT mentioned. Amelia Tilford, Mary's grandmother, tells all the parents to get their daughters out of their school, because of this allegation. Mrs. Tilford had spoken to Lily Mortar who said that Martha felt unnatural about Karen. That was how Mrs. Tilford was "sure" of the allegation. Mary then gets Rosalie Wells, another student, to say she saw the two teachers doing inappropriate sexual stuff or else she was going to tell everyone that she stole a bracelet from another student, when, in reality, Rosalie just borrowed it and was going to return it when Mary made her drop it. Mary says no one will believe Rosalie and that Mary will tell everyone she stole it and will go to jail if she doesn't "admit" to "seeing" Martha and Karen doing "inappropriate sexual stuff." Mary made Rosalie lie to the teachers, Dr. Carton, and her grandmother. Martha and Karen lose the case. In addition, Lily Mortar failed to come and testify for them since she was the cause. She was the one who said Martha felt unnatural towards Karen. In the beginning, Mrs. Mortar was sent away from the school, because all Martha wanted was for her to be in the theatre like she had always dreamed of, but Mrs. Mortar accused her of wanting to get rid of her. That was when she said Martha was jealous of Karen marrying Joe and that she felt unnatural towards Karen. Mrs. Mortar does come back, because she is broke. Unfortunately, Joe began to believe the allegations against Karen and Martha and leaves, though Karen said she guesses he believed her and Martha. Martha then tearfully admits that she did love Karen "that way." At the same time, Rosalie's mother finds the "stolen" bracelet and Rosalie tells Mrs. Tilford and her mother how Mary forced her to tell that malicious lie. Mrs. Tilford apologizies profusely to Martha and Karen, offering them a public apology and money paid, but the teachers are not placated and do NOT accept her apology although she swears to God she is very sorry and offers her anything to make things right. Martha goes upstairs and Karen goes for a walk. They decide they will leave and begin again somewhere else. At the end, Karen sees Martha hung herself in her room. At the cemetery, Joe is in the background and is watching, but Karen is oblivious to him. Mrs. Tilford was there tearfully. Everyone watched her leave the cemetery and she walked into the sunlight with her head up.

Way to tell the tale, bthcrlsol!!! Great Job! I finally saw this movie (yep -- in 2007), and I will NEVER forget it. I had no idea Shirley MacLaine was that phenomenal as an actress. I mean, both these girls made me feel it through their performances. They were both truly blessed with talent and looks. And regarding Shirley, additionally The girl took risks on doing it AND she carried it like a true champ, and so did Audrey. Too greats in action on this one, no doubt. Oh, and both very lovely too.
