I know it was completely unintentional, but it made me laugh. Right after Mrs. Tilford talks to Martha's aunt and she begins to realize that Mary might be right, Martha's aunt says that she forgot her umbrella, then comments that its "in the closet". Again, I know it wasn't a joke. I don't even think the term "in the closet" was used then. Even if it was, that sort of joke never would have made it past the censors at that time. But it was a little ironic and it made me chuckle.

It meant nothing. It was just a ditzy old woman who babbled and was forgetful. You are reading too much into that scene.

I understand that. That's why I said that twice in my post. I just thought it was a funny coincidence considering what that phrase means now. I wasn't implying that it was anything more than that.

The phrase "in the closet" in reference to homosexuality was in use in the US beginning in the 50's. As this movie was released in 1961, I don't see why it couldn't have meant exactly that. I think it was meant to be funny. This movie could use a little humor (no matter how small). And it would have easily passed the censors. What's wrong with leaving your umbrella in the closet?
The phrase made me laugh the first time I saw the movie too. And I saw the movie for the first time in a course entitle 'Homosexuality in Literature,' and we discussed the reference.

Thought it was meant to be subtle. Don't remember if Celluloid in Closet ever mentioned that, but def. something similar was used at the time or even before.

I don't intend to be offensive, but I have to defend my opinions.
