What a nice surprise

I saw this on TCM and I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. I was surprised about the subject matter and tone given the time of this film's release in 1962.

I thought the bratty, little girl was terrifically horrible in this movie. I thought she should have been nominated for best supporting actress.

But, then again, all of the performances were terrific. Good movie.

I saw it on TCM also. Despite having gorgeous cinematography and a very committed and talented cast, the film left me with mixed feelings. Audrey Hepburn and Shirley MacLaine do come across as best friends and act together very well, but Wyler seemed to have shaped performances (out of what must have been dozens of takes) lacking in subtlety and grace (in some cases he even awkwardly patches two separate takes of the same shot in a single scene). The subject matter of people's prejudice of suspected lesbianism is does provoke true feelings of sadness, yet the compromises they made due to the production code dulled what could have been a very sharp and frank film on the topic. In addition, not seeing the trial which left these women in an empty house felt like a cheat and deprived me of seeing the characters properly transition into their deep despair.

The movie we have today isn't bad, but unfortuately is a case a good story which couldn't be properly licked in the time of its creation.
