Can anything compare?

I've seen A LOT of GLBT films, and this one still tops the list.
There's no sex, violence, or any of the above, and yet it still rips at my heart strings.
Was it the acting? the actors and actresses? What is the allure behind this film... I haven't quite put my finger on it...
and also,
is there any other movies that could possibly compare (GLBT films only please!:))

I'm not sure what it is either, I had read the play but just saw the film last night on TCM. It struck a cord in me, especially when Shirley's character commits suicide. There was something so honest & painful in her realization of her feelings for Hepburn's character that it almost made me cry. I don't know any that can compare, but Lost & Delirious has a certain way about it that seems beautiful, but tinged with sadness & pain that you find in Shirley's character almost.

Agreed, maybe that is it...
It's just honest.
Lost and Delirious has some similar qualities yes,
haha it does seem a little out there though :)

I think BOYS DON'T CRY compares very favorably...extremely powerful and very, very sad in several ways. THE CRYING GAME is another one I feel is on a par with the other 2.
