When Karen is telling Joe to ask her if it was true, Joe said he believed there was nothing to the lie. He seemed convincing to me, but Karen seemed to understand that he had doubts and maybe even didn't believe her at all. When he left and said "I'll be back" and she said (after he had left) "no, you won't." How did the "get" that Joe really didn't believe her and intended to never come back?
shareIf he trusted her, he wouldn't have needed to even ask the question. The fact that he did, led her to believe that a small seed of doubt was planted in his mind and it slowly grew. Thus, she said "no, you won't." Basically, she was letting him go, allowing him to escape the hell they were living. He had to leave the hospital, get a new job, move to a different place. His supervisor even told him, that if he severed ties with the girls, he could stay and work there. So Karen released him from his "obligation" to stand by her.
