This film could not have been made, shown, and received as well as it was in 1961, without the so-called lesbian character killing herself. They were still doing brain surgeries in the U.S. on gays during this time. (To try and take away their sex drive and therefore try and make them as near heterosexual as possible.)

Yeah I agree. For some reason I stupidly thought it was going to end on a positive note, like Karen walking around outside. But then suddenly the bad music comes and Karen panics and I was like noooooo damnit. And then was like well that's right, this was made in the 60s, of course she had to be doomed and kill herself.
Having seen These Three and enjoying it, I liked the suicide twist of this movie even more
