Fred mentally challenged?

Anyone else get the impression that Fred (Holly's brother whom we never see) may have been mentally challenged in some way? He is described as being big and slow and somewhat childlike. I can't remember how he was described in the novella. Could this be one of the reasons Doc wants Holly to come home and "take care" of him?

reply

I was always under that impression, though I couldn't pinpoint exactly why. Just the way she describes him.

reply

Yes, she stated he was. Not incredibly slow, but somewhat slow.

In Truman Capote's novella, Holly describes Fred as "...sweet and vague and terribly slow; he'd been in the eighth grade three years when I ran away."

For whatever reason, the reference to Fred having to repeat the eighth grade twice wasn't included in the film's screenplay.

Maybe he's just a "dumb jock."

reply

Yes

The way she talks about him, he sounds as if he's retarded. But the Army wouldn't have taken him if he was that stupid. He must just be a bit slow.
