I didn't quite get that part. Can somebody explain what happened?

there is no explanation :)... that said...
to me it's just one more turn in the corridor, perhaps the darkest one - a murder version somehow brilliantly interconnected with the several disjointed scenes from the shooting gallery, and if you accept and make this turn, consider the last minute of the film and the "meaning" of closing phrases under that angle.
Maybe this a a simplistic approach. but don't you think that A was dead all along? and that X actually had an affair with A the year before and was searching for evidence of his memories? Don't you think that they were part of a game of NIM in which M ended up winning and both lovers (A and X) ended up losing and M(who would always win nomatter what) had been the last matchstick left off the heap?
