My thoughts afte a 2nd viewing
I just saw this movie again, with my wife as the opening film for a French New Wave "festival" (11 films over two 4 day weekends at a Modern Art Musuem in Fort Worth). My wife hated it by the way, the phrase "you owe me" came up on the ride home. She mentioned that she had given up on enjoying the film before it started because the pre-show speaker said that it was boring, without a plot, and that, quoting Roger Ebert, "there were no answers." I think she might of given it a chance if the speaker wasn't so glib about the qualities of the film.
These are my thoughts regarding the film after seeing it on the big screen:
1. The difference between emotional truth and factual truth with regard to memory.
2. The differences between the two people’s emotional truth for the same factual event.
3. Factual truth, such as a sculpture or two people walking, can lead to an emotional lie or misconception.
4. Proust: When two people that used to love each other meet again there is a death between them.
5. Choosing between a life of security and a life with love.
6. The difference and similarity between different increments of time, i.e. “not now,…” next week or next month or next year.
7. Different factual events that lead to the same emotional truth.
8. Changing your emotions, feelings, with regard to a emotional truth, event, and having to reconcile that with the person you shared the emotional truth with.
9. Finding a connecting points between emotion based memories for multiple people while attempting to reconcile those memories with the factual memories, i.e. a photograph.
10. ...It has some funny moments
