direct influence on 'high fashion' commercials?

growing up, i had always found something disalarming and beautiful about perfume and jewelry commercials, such as this one from chanel:

does anyone know anything about the history of "high fashion" commercials? there seems to be a lot of similarities between spots such as the one i posted and the films of alain resnais or alain robbe-grillet.

it is known tha Karl Lagerfeld is a big fun of this movie. It was also his main inspiration for Chanel's spring summer 2011 collection. u can see the amazing video on YouTube:
