Bye-Bye Mommy...Bye-Bye Daddy

When I was a kid I'd watch this show with my parents on Nick-At-Night (I think was in the late 80s). This show in particular was one of my favorites (along with Mr. Ed). Anybody remember the episode where they're taking care of Capt. Block's parrot? They want to teach him to talk so they buy a record that continuously play "Bye-Bye Mommy...Bye-Bye Daddy" over and over and over again. During a weekly bridge game, the bidding around the table degenerates from "1 heart" and "I double" to "I double daddy mommy your mommy daddy bye-bye." It was all done with such speed with the players not knowing they were saying it all enhanced the effect.

If this weren't enough for tears to start streaming with laughter, later in the episode a frustrated Toody lashes out in frustration that he has to care for a stupid parrot (who still hasn't said anything) while Capt. Block goes on vacation. Shouting "I HATE CAPTAIN BLOCK" in an argument with Lucille, the parrot is finally impressed and starts (of course) to repeat "I hate Capt. Block" again and again. Horrified, Toody takes the parrot to the pet store to try and reverse the damage before Cpat. Block comes home to a parrot who hates him...sadly it has the opposite effect as the parrot's repetition is grasped by the other parrots in the store, all of whom start repeating "I hate Capt. Block...I hate Capt. Block." Maybe it won't be so bad right? Well, sunning himself on vacation, Capt. Block is lying in peace determined to enjoy the rest of his vacation when who walks by? Someone who bought a parrot from the same store..."I hate Capt. Block." There was something in the expression on Block's face that was even funnier than the ruined bridge game.

This episode alone should be enough to get this show released on DVD.

I watched that episode again recently! It's called "I hate Captain Block!"

Just saw that one for the first time. My wife and I totally broke down laughing when the parrot first said that eponymous phrase. I had to pause the dvr and take a few minutes to recover before we could proceed with the rest of the episode. Total riot!

This is my favorite episode, as well. The bridge scene was a definite classic, but my favorite part is when Toody first takes home the bird (was "Bebe" it's name?) and Lucille comes in to find out what he's doing. Toody informs her he's attempting to teach Bebe to talk, and Lucille quips, "And who's going to teach you first?"

Life's a ditch. Can you dig it?
