WHEN? DVD
Will this series EVER be released on DVD?
shareTis a consummation devotely to be wished.
You can lead a horse to water, but a pencil must be lead.
I know "Car 54" was released on VHS years ago, maybe not all the episodes and maybe not in order, but they're there. But I, too, am waiting to see it on DVD. I have a lot of the shows recorded from Nick at Nite, but I would like to have them uncut and uninterrupted in digital quality. Andy maybe while we're wishing we could get some special features like TV promos from that time and commercials. The commercials that are included in a couple of the seasons of "Andy Griffith" on DVD are great. The actors, still in character, plugging Sanka and Jello Pudding. Very fun.

Yes, here in New York City, early 2001, the Time-Warner cable service had a station, Metro, channel 70, that used to show NYC based/themed shows, basically forgettable stuff from the early 1970s. About a month or so before they went on the air, they were broadcasting promos hawking the re-showing of "Car 54, Where Are You?". I thought I was dreaming! But I wasn't...the station went on to broadcast two episodes each weekday, twice. Two were shown at noontime, and then both were rerun at 4PM....totally uncut, commercial-free and in chronological order. They showed the entire run of 60 episodes four times over before the Metro channel changed formats and became a sports-oriented station. I sure wish that this incredibly funny, real (so reflective of NYC at the time) and true-to-life, series would be on DVD soon!
shareI'm waiting as well. I think there's a lot of folk waiting for this. Why are the studios so slow in responding to demand? The tapes only had 16 episodes on, that means there's lots more to come. As usual, the older shows knock the socks off most recent productions.
shareMy fingers are crossed. I was only lucky enough to catch this on Nick at Night several years ago. Though I was a lad of 3 when it went off the air, I vaguely recall seeing an episode or two. When I got to watch it as an adult (and actually know what I was watching) I was in stitches. How could a show as well known as this NOT be on DVD? I'm shocked that the studios aren't cashing in on this. With some of the crap that has made it onto a disc, how could they not put this out for us?
I'm ranting I know, but I feel a few good rants are in order here. I'm just so glad to see so many others who feel the same way. Car 54, where ARE you? Your public wants to know!
This show was AWESOME! I too am anxiously waiting...
shareIt appears to be available from this site:
http://www.tvaddicts.tv/movie/comedy/Car_54_Where_Are_You.html
for a reduced (?) price of $81.99 for a 10 DVD set. I haven't bought this yet, but the site appears to be authentic, from what I can tell, although there is no region coding on them. I've seen pirate copies also, some of which appear to have been made from this original.
I think the answer to WHY is hasn't yet been released can be seen by this message board. One stinking thread! Even though I love the show myself - the fact is, not that many people are really clammering for this.
shareI'm afraid you are right. If we get lucky, maybe it will somehow, someway, it'll appear on DVD.
shareIf there's a waiting list, I'd like to get on. Anybody know of one? CC
shareI found a DVD copy on sell dot com, but it was recorded from Nick at Night. If it is in the public domain (as it might be), then this would be legal. I would still buy a studio copy, if it ever becomes available. The quality of the one from sell is not that great.
shareNat Hiken created two of the funniest shows in the history of TV. Yet, neither Car 54 nor Bilko have had seasonal releases. Meanwhile, every lousy sit-com under the sun gets the dvd treatment. Whoever owns the rights to these shows should be ashamed. Even if they believe that people won't buy these series in mass quantities, the shows still deserve to be available based on the on the fact that they're two of the greatest comedies ever produced. Maybe when every other TV show has been released on dvd, and Hiken's are the only two left, we'll get them.
shareI am also waiting for this to come out on DVD.
shareI don't understand why if you want to see these again so bad you wouldn't buy a copy someone recorded off nick at Nite. i recorded them and although the quality isn't real good I am just glad I have them and can watch them anytime i want. I waited almost 30 years to see them again.
shareI recorded them off Nick At Nite, too, but, I believe, there was one episode missing. It was one in which Toody & Muldoon were assigned to escort "the President" from the airport when he was in NYC. Toody was fine but Muldoon idolized "the President". JFK was President at the time and this made perfect sense, although I don' think his name was mentioned, until a newsreel sequence at the end that showed him arriving at Idewild Airport.
Muldoon had to take downers & uppers to deal with his nervousness & the reaction of the Secret Service guy riding with them on a preliminary basis (and not knowing what was up) was the humor of the episode.
I'm not sure if it was the JFK reference or the use of drugs that caused Nick to censor it but it was definitely not shown.
Sam Tomaino (still waiting for that DVD set)
Ooh! Ooh! Add me to the list of people begging for a DVD release of this comic masterpiece.
shareI saw that episode when it had been rerun here on one of the NYC-centric cable channels. Toody and Muldoon were assigned to guard the President (I don't remember if the name Kennedy was mentioned, either). However, Capt Block, in his reaction upon hearing this news made a comment to his sergeant something to the effect that something really dire (my word) might happen to the Pres. In light of the event of the 22nd of November, maybe that's why Nickelodeon, foolishly, decided to not show it. Jeez, good to know Nick At Night is watching out for our sensibilities!
shareThis looks like it:

Thanks Robert. That's good to know. I was really hoping it would get the GET SMART:The Complete Series treatment with a ton of extras, but after the flop they did a decade ago, I don't see enough interest from the studio to beef up another release.
shareI bought this set and was very disappointed when I realized it was obviously copied from reruns on the t.v. There are 10 diskettes. One doesn't work at all and the rest are somewhat flawed. But since I dearly love the show I'll take what I can get.
It's funny, the actors are great, and the plots - although not too complicated - are beautifully written.
Also, Rocky Graziano, Sugar Ray Robinson, Margaret Hamilton, etc. as guest characters. How can you miss?
It's really too bad more people aren't award of it. I talk about it frequently and get dull stares. But I would love to have a really good set of DVDs - don't see it happening though.
Maybe others will have more success than I.
First, any of these TV shows that aren't commercially available on DVD, but are available on DVD from miscellaneous websites ARE GOING TO BE RECORDED OFF THE TV. How can anyone not know this? Where do you think they are coming from?
Secondly, the TVADDICTS website has a notorious reputation of selling crap and in some cases, not delivering at all. BEWARE!
Went online found it on Ebay.

I bought a complete set of all 60 episodes on dvd from ebay. The seller claims they are all public domain which I doubt.
shareDearShemp,
when you do get them - could you write as to the quality of the discs? I'd seen some myself on the site and always wondered as I'm looking to get the series on dvd as well. Thanks!

Fred Gwynn and Al Lewis later did The Munsters which is on dvd but Car 54 isn't but is a whole lot funnier in my opinion than Munsters. If it ever comes out on dvd, I will be buying it or even on iTunes so I can download to my PC. To whomever owns the Car 54 rights, "WHERE ARE YOU?" We want to know.
shareSeveral years ago, I found one VHS tape from what I assume was a set. It was priced at $2 in KMart or Caldor or some such store. I felt like I had struck gold! The box says: Republic Pictures Home Video w/a copyright date of 1990. It has two episodes with original airdates of 9/17/61 and 9/24/61--"Who's For Swordfish?" and "Something Nice For Sol". Both are hilarious, and I've watched them many times, but I need more, more, more!
