Was it a writer's inside joke?

In the episode "Joan Crawford Didn't Say No," Mrs. Bronson says to a customer leaving her office (and I'm paraphrasing a bit, because I was laughing), "What do you need with Tab Hunter, Rock Hudson is a better choice." The fact that both actors were closeted homosexuals at the time made me wonder if the writer was being funnier than the audience would have known in 1963.

Are you missing the point of my question purposely? I asked if anyone thought the writer was making an "inside Television/Hollywood joke" about the two actors and you decide to respond with hate?

reply

Sorry, my response was not intended at all as hateful. It included a Yiddish euphemism for homosexuals which Mrs. Bronson would have used, in fact, my own grandmother used it and she was the nicest, kindest person who ever lived.

As far as I know, Rock Hudson's homosexuality was fairly common knowledge in the industry. But knowledge about Hunter apparently got no further than rumors.

I suspect the writer knew exactly what he was writing.

When it comes to unfamiliar words -- shall I explain "gunsel"?
