One of the Most Romantic Movies Ever!

I just watched this movie again last night. This has to be one of the most romantic films I've ever seen with love overcoming social taboos, racial prejudice, class distinctions, and an age difference between the two lead characters. LOVE the final lines of the film when Robert asks Suzie to marry him and go with him wherever he goes and Suzie replies that she will be with him until he no longer wants her to which Robert replies, "That long?"

Plus, William Holden was really hot in this film.

My sis and I watched this last year and we would prefer Suzie Wong to have had another profession instead of prostitution. Dancer, maybe???!!!

Anyway, I ADORE William Holden in these scenes and he has so much charisma. What a sensitive and manly actor!

I liked The World of Suzy Wong. I thought it was going to a one dimensional gweilo fantasy, but it had more layers than that. I felt sorry for Suzy when her baby is killed by debris during a mudslide and Robert cares about Suzy(he doesn't want to simply "play" with her). We also get to hear some spoken Cantonese and Mandarin.

In Full Contact, Chow Yun Fat's co star calls a prostitute a "Suzy".

TWOSW may have been spoofed in the Li Ching/Shaw Brothers studio film, A Place to Call Home.

it had to be a prostitute or the movie would not have worked. I have lived in may Asian countries and have seen many western guys fall in love with Asian working girls and marry them. Many girls even come to work in the bars in order to find a husband.

However, a dancer in Asia is highly regarded by society.

This film and "The Ghost and Mrs. Muir", with Gene Tierney and Rex Harrison are my favorite Romance movies. I think because this was Nancy Kwans first role, she hadn't picked up pat mannerisms, that actors seems to take on as their careers unfold. Therefore, there were some natural acting taking place by her.
