Who HASN'T read the book?

If you haven't read the original H G Wells book then I would thoroughly recommend doing so. Great as it is, this movie really isn't anywhere near as good as the original book (a problem inherent in many book to movie adaptations of course).

The 'end of the world' sequence in the book (totally absent from the movie) is absolutely chilling.

Also, if you can, do try and buy the audio book that is superbly narrated by Ralph Cosham. His narration is flawless and really adds to the atmosphere.

I disagree, great as the book is, and I've read it many times, I prefer the film. If you're looking for a short socialist parable, in the form of a dystopian Sci-Fi novella, then the book is perfect. The film's anti war/anti nuclear message may not be as intellectual in comparison, but unlike the book, the characters of the time traveler called George in the film, and especially Filby have far more depth to them, and their friendship is fleshed out. As far as actual time traveling goes the film is better too. In the book, the description of it is very brief, whereas in the film, it's a long detailed sequence, with Oscar winning special effects that still hold up well to this day, and the stops George makes during the two world wars give it an extra layer of verisimilitude that wouldn't have been possible in the book.

There's two versions of the book. Are you familiar with them both?
