Strange Scene

What do people think of that strange scene when George has found this seeming paradise in the year 802,701 and he is walking through the forest right before he discovers the Eloi and all of a sudden he becomes irrationally terrified, starts running and acting paranoid and the music becomes ominous, threatening and even scary? Does anyone have any theories as to what is going on here? Why has George suddenly become so irrationally terrified and paranoid for no reason?

Because he is starting to fear that mankind has been eradicated from the earth.

Yes, he thought mankind was no more, so he panicked. If you ask me, he acted rationally in that scene.

I would've been terrified after I saw that hideous statue head on top of the door to the underground. I'd have thought some terrible alien race had annihilated humanity. Strangely it didn't seem to bother George though.
