What Happened To The Mother?!?

I know I didn't dose off. The father died, that I know but for a movie that starts out with the mother on the train she is quickly abandoned. Anybody know?

She sat in her bedroom and got plastered every day. Alfred got out of town and left his loser relatives behind.

In the film, her story is just dropped after Lex reports that she called to say that Alfred's father had died.

In the novel she lives on and has a more involved story, but remains more or less the same.

This is a major weakness of the film. The mother just kind of disappears after the opening scenes, where she's the focal point. And Myrna Loy got third billing too!

Any movie that uses the great Myrna Loy in such a way deserves to be ignored.
