last decent role?

Two seconds of research told me that both "Spartacus" and "Elmer Gantry" came out in the same year. Which came first?

reply

elmer gantry was released first.

In that case, "Spartacus" was her last great film!

I had a quick look at her filmography, and after 1960 she did films I hadn't heard of, or TV, and appeared on programs like "Star Trek TNG" and "Murder She Wrote". But her later film career did have one absolutely glowing exception, she did the leading voice role for the English version of "Howl's Moving Castle", one of my all-time favorite movies! I might even prefer it to the justifiably famous and award-showed "Spirited Away", because it's one of those movies that reflects my personal experience. Maybe I'll watch it again tonight.

like a lot of actresses from that era her career peaked by her mid thirties.

reply

Actually, like most actresses of her day, he career slowed down dramatically when she hit 30! At least today's actresses can keep getting plenty of "the girl" roles in their thirties, forty is the new "death year". But she was 30 when she made "Spartacus" and "Elmer Gantry", and after that Hollywood seems to have forgotten her.

She divorced and remarried in 1960, maybe that was a point where she had better things to do with her time than deal with Hollywood.
