Arthur Kennedy was great in this!

He was very good as the cynical writer and I feel he should have been nominated for best supporting actor in this movie.

Also very good in it was Edward Andrews as George Bobbitt even though his performance was not as good as Kennedy's nor was he in the movie as much.

Kennedy's role reminded me of a similar part he played in Lawrence of Arabia as a somewhat cynical journalist. But I agree, great part for him, and his scenes with Lancaster and Simmons are spot-on. Great role for an underrated actor.

Yes! I was thinking the same thing but I couldn't place the movie. Thank you.

The book shows his charecter Jim Lefferts, as Elmer's roomate in the seminary, frequently brought up by the good rev. as a testbook example of a lost soul.
How ironic

THANK YOU TO THE ORIGINAL POSTER!

I always said that this movie was held together by Arthur's wonderful performance, and he should not only have been nominated but won for his role here.

A great actor who seems to have been forgotten...shame.

Yes, Kennedy was always the "overlooked" actor, but critics and those who know always sang his praises. He was a brilliant actor and deserves more. But then, so many great pre-1960 actors are forgotten or ignored.

I can't think of a film Kennedy was in that I didn't think his performance was the best, including Lawrence, Champion, A Summer Place, and Gantry. Truly and actor's actor.

Thanks to the original poster and to Arthur.

Yeah, he was good and it's kinda nice the way he and Lancaster's Gantry get along with each other as friendly enemies.
