BEST SCREENPLAY ** EVER **

The lines in this movie from Gantry's quiet recollection of "I pulled out a Gideon's Bible" to Jim Jefferts wanting to believe if he had some proof to Sister Falconer's preaching are the best I've ever seen. Richard Brooks just nailed it.

I agree - the measure is that it still stands up well today, and the pace is stunning for a film of that age. It was, of course, helped by the source material!

What a shame this film isn't better known; I guess it doesn't fit the 90m TV slot so gets overlooked?

Seriously, young people quote from The Godfather, Wall Street and Boiler Room. I bet they'd quote from this movie too if it was shown on MTV or VH1. Just a matter of availability, quality will then rule, young people today are looking for that "hook", "quote" or "hypocracy" and they can point it out.
