The beach scene

I know he had an affiar with lulu, but that scene on the beach, did elmer and sharon have sex? i sorta felt it was a sign when sharon was pouring the sand outta her shoe, but that just could of been a joke about where she had been, you know.

"Death by tray it shall be!"

I think they did have sex. To me, that's why the tabernacle burnt down - because she and Gantry "sinned" just beneath it. Interesting to note that the fire was reminiscent of Hell, and Sharon was the only person who didn't make it out alive. She actually chose to stay, either surrendering to the will of God because she knew she had sinned, or wrongly believing God would save her because her faith was so strong.

Of course that would suggest divine intervention, and since the author of the novel is namedropped as an athiest, perhaps that's not the intention.

Yes, we're definitely meant to understand that they had sex. Notice that right after this they are an "item": extremely familiar with one another, kissing unselfconsciously, exchanging flowers, etc. If the conclusion of that scene wasn't the two of them getting together, then we'd have no explanation for why their relationship has changed.

Also, there would be no reason to end that scene with them walking off camera into the darkness.

yeah, they got it on...she says, "i never...."

Man, I don't drop character 'till I done the DVD commentary-Kirk Lazurus

now I may get this all wrong but there was a preacher woman back in those days in Los Angeles that had a chuch in downtown Los angeles and it burnt down and some peeps died. The woman even mysterical disapeared and she had some phony excuse what happened to her. Probably she was in some hidy hole doing what a person does when they excape from the world for a bit....

For sure. Keep in mind that this movie when this movie was made. So there was a lot of panning to the trees and the like, instead of one of the characters saying to another, "Hey, whaddya say we go get it on in the Biblical sense?"

The over-the-top music that plays right at the end of the scene is another clue. The book (of which Elmer's relationship with Sharon was only a small part) made it quite clear. It also made Sharon Falconer to out to be both a fraud and a religious kook. And since the character was based upon Amiee Semple McPherson, there is little doubt that this was the intention.

If that was the case, then would it class God as a misogynist as Gantry went unpunished?
