The Opening Scene

I hope someone can help me with this. In the beginning Elmer Gantry goes into a Black Church and starts singing away. Would a real white person have done this in the America of 1927? Many thanks to anyone who could help!!
Thank you

It would probably depend on where the church was, but you can bet any amount that NO black person circa 1927 would've gone into a white church and started singing (unless specifically invited).

"May I bone your kipper, Mademoiselle?"

First of all, he was shoeless and hungry. He felt he would be accepted easier there than with white people. You notice the Congregation was wary at first. He could have been there to harass them or burn the place down. Once he started singing and smiling, they relaxed. They were impressed that he knew the spiritual. The Pastor, as a man of God could never turn away a hungry fellow Christian.
