Please tell me the ending! (SPOILERS)
I need spoilers! I missed it right after the guy regained his hearing. Darn! I know that she died, but how? And what happened to Lulu? Was she there? What did Elmer end up doing? Thanks so much!

shareYou might remember a guy throwing a cigarette butt into a pile of trash. Well, no surprise, it ignited the church into an inferno. Sister Sharon died in the fire as she "went down with the ship" so to speak. Reporter Jim showed Elmer his newspaper where Lulu confessed to framing Elmer, and that he was cleared of all charges. In the end, people gathered around the smouldering church, and Elmer began preaching and leading them in a hymn. (I think it was that same hymn Elmer sang earlier when he was in the black church).
shareA major event you missed was that she performed a miracle healing a deaf man just before the tabernacle burns to the ground. She is trampled on as people run like rats in a burning cage, and Lancaster is pushed outside, and falls into the water, unable to assist Simmons. So yes, Simmons is martyred, but it just seems so unnecessary a tragic ending. Perhaps it was written in the book that way.
The next day Lancaster sings "On My Way" the same song in the beginning of the movie. The End
Although the movie is significantly different from the book (which I just finished reading a couple of days ago), Sharon does indeed die in a fire in the book. However, she dies in the middle of the book, and the rest of the book is devoted to Gantry's rise in the church.
