I just finished reading it day before yesterday. There are lots of differences. Lulu Baines was not a whore--she was engaged to Elmer, married someone else, and wound up having an affair with Elmer until he tired of her. Sharon died in the middle of the book; the rest of the book was about Elmer's rise (and fall) with various churches. There are many other differences. You should read the book--I'm sure you would enjoy it.
