Casting for remake of Elmer Gantry

Mike Huckabee as Elmer Gantry.
Any thoughts?

reply

Well, "they" say a drunk can't play a drunk scene. So, using this logic, Huckabee shouldn't be able to portray Elmer convincingly.

But throughout it all, my motto was "Dignity! Always dignity!".

Marjoe Gortner.

reply

Wow, is Marjoe Gortner still around? I haven't heard anything about him in years.

Sadly, I agree he'd be perfect for the part.

He's still around, but hasn't made a movie in over ten years.

"Sadly, I agree he'd be perfect for the part."

I'm not a big fan of his either, but I thought with his background, he'd be the obvious choice. <G>

Love the sarcasm in that reply! Hope I'm correct in seeing it as such! What a no talent money maker for the studios he is. A pretty face doesn't get past those of use who appreciate Cagney, Lancaster and the likes of the profession.

reply

Barak Obama seems the obvious choice at present as Elmer Gantry.

reply

Obama as a Bible-banging, drunken hypocrite? Nah. Now, Dubya....<G>

THAT would be magnificent casting. Elmer has to be good-looking and intelligent and sleazy at the same time, the type who you like even though you know he's no good.
He can do bad and good with ease.

reply

No doubt you just described Slick Willy!

reply

Matthew McConaughey

Richard Rossi, former Falwell-trained fundamentalist turned actor is rumored to be playing Gantry in new version. He played the role to rave reviews on Broadway.

reply

Updated, modern-era version: main character is a bitchy Lesbian who falls for Sharon Falconer and ultimately seduces her. ROSIE O'DONNELL as Thelma Gantry!

reply

Tom Cruise as Elmer Gantry
Katie Holmes as Sister Falconer
Nicole Kidman as Lulu Baines

I rarely join discussions about politics or remakes, but I couldn't help but think of Sarah Palin as I watched this. Who says Elmer has to be a male?

reply

I read in L.A. Times Richard Rossi is cast in remake, (he played the role to rave reviews on Broadway, and in the film "Sister Aimee: The Aimee Semple McPherson Story"). Shirley Jones rumored to do a cameo. Several A-list actresses are under considration for Sister Sharon.

reply

What about Charlie Sheen? He'd be wild in the part.
