Has anyone seen the new cut? What is in those extra 10 minutes?

The press about the newly released version of the film reports that there are 10 additional minutes, specifically of Anita Ekberg.

This thrills me to no end. Has anyone seen the new cut? Did they notice the new footage, and when it appeared? I'd love to know more about it.

No, but it's showing at MoMA at the moMANT.

Saw it MoMA last nite. Running time was 174 minutes, so no new footage on this print. Though the museum claimed it was a restored print, question is, but when? The print unspooled last nite was chock full of scratches & pops and not a few mended breaks. Most imperfections occurred at beginning & end of reels, as is typical of older prints of films. Interiors of the reels did look pretty clean. MoMA probably owns 1 print of most of their films and requests them from their storage facilities in Pennsylvania and they are then sent to the museum for screening. I've not heard anything about an extra 10 minutes of footage being restored to LA DOLCE VITA. Extra footage from the film may very well exist, but I haven't heard of any pending re-release of the movie on DVD.

If you go to Scorsese's Film Foundation website, it does say LA DOLCE VITA was restored in 2010. A press release on the website says that it was shown last June at a private screening at the Tribeca Grand Hotel, and then at Film Forum for a 2 week run. However, the print screened at MoMA last night (Dec. 26, 2011) still had the aforementioned (in my last post) scratches, pops, & mended cuts. Running time was 174 minutes, so no new footage was included in this print. Despite MoMA's claim, this print could not possibly have been Scorsese's & Cineteca di Bologna's restoration. According to the press release, Mediaset restored the film in the 1990s. Maybe that's the restoration MoMA owns.

Thanks for the nitty-gritty! Are they still planning to have another showing on Sunday? Thanks, again!

reply

It's scheduled for 2 pm on Sunday. MoMA says on their website that the print is "a beautifully restored print from Cinema Forever and Scuola Nazionale di Cinema." This is not Scorsese's Film Foundation/Cineteca di Bologna's recent restoration. The print that MoMA owns and probably will be showing on Sunday must be at least 10 to 15 years old.

Noted. Thanks for the heads up!
