They are very different kind of movies and hard to compare. But l'avventura is better than blow-up in my opinion. I don't want to say more about what kind of movie l'avventura is, beceause I belive in seeing films without knowing anything about them.
You really liked blow-up. You have to get the criterion collection DVD of L'avventura. No doubt about it. And then La Notte and L'Eclisse!
L'avventura is a film to be watched again and again. Each time you might pick up something you missed before. Also, the DVD has commentary by a film critic who provides some fascinating background on how it was made, the significance of some of the shots, etc. It is well worth listening to. Antonioni was one of the best directors when it came to framing a shot and conveying meaning just through composition and order within the shot.
The actors are all good and do an outstanding job, especially when you know what they had to go through to get this thing done. Monica Vitti looks alluring and beautiful. Hard to believe this film was shot more than 45 years ago. Very few films today come close to the artistic quality of L'avventura.

Thought she looked rather bland.

this is much better then Blow-Up ... however, much like the first response stated already ... these are very different movies, no matter how similiar some stylistic devices might be.
i personally never cared for Blow-Up so without a doubt L'avventura was better for me. Even more astonishing, however, was Antonioni's L'eclisse, my favorite of his. Red Desert is also very good; Antonioni+Monica Vitti+color
shareThey are the two Antonioni films (that I've seen) that are conventional, insofar as having a plot that matters.
L'Avventura and L'Eclise are feeling-only films, about alienation, modernity, the impossibility of relationships, whatever. You have to enjoy the art, and get it explained on the accompanying critical voiceover to enjoy them. As stories, less so.
No, this film is not as good as Blow-Up, IMHO. Blow-Up was much better.
Schrodinger's cat walks into a bar, or doesn't.
