From what I have heard (I was only 3 when this came out) Charles Herbert was one of the most popular child actors of his day. Apparently William Castle (the director) really wanted him in the film; so much that he was offered top billing.
shareThe only other child stars I can even think that can come close to that caliber of fame over more experienced adult actors would be the boy who played Beaver Cleaver from Leave it to Beaver and, of course, Shirley Temple.
Oh, and Jackie Gleason too, the one who plays Uncle Fester in The Addams Family.
I was born far after this film's release. It's cool that we can talk about it to each other, appreciating what makes it special in spite of our age difference.
