The lion ghost
Did they ever explain how the lion was cut the way that it was?

The lion was wearing a safety girdle to control it during filming. The garment left a blank space in the lion's midriff. You can see the "cloth" flap as he breathes. They did not have cgi to fill it in back then.

So, the lion wasn't supposed to have been sliced up or something like that?

No, I don't think he was cut up. The guy above is right. The flap moves around as the lion moves.
The lion was a bad ghost because he bit the trainer's head off.
If you look at the lion tamer, you'll see the same problem. There is a rectangle in the upper chest that is a screen for the actor to look through, that they couldn't CGI out apparently.
I think that the lion was shot to death after it ate the head of the tamer. I picked that up somewhere. Maybe Buck tells his mom that after he sees the lion and Tamer in the secret basement room.
I was just wondering the same thing as I watch the movie on dvr from TCM ( recorded back in December). Glad someone had an answer.
