where is this house?

Does anyone know where this house is located? I know I have seen it before in other movies, maybe Phantasm III?? I read somewhere that this was also the "munster house" but they do not look the same.

My uncle thinks it looks a lot like the Winchester Mystery House in San Jose, and it kind of does to me too, especially because of the palm trees.

It reminded me of The Munster's house. Which, I believe was on the Universal lot.

Building # 3 on Colonial Street, Universal Studios, Hollywood is where the Munsters was filmed in the 1960's, today it is part of the set for "Desperate Housewives" (the same street was used in "Ghost Whisperer"). It does look something like the house but although the home was built in 1946 for the movie "So Goes My Love", then it was on Sound Stage #12 and only later was moved to its present location. Castle worked on a very limited budget and often used the homes of friends, or anyone he could convince. He certainly didn't use the property of Universal due to cost. This could be anyone of a hundred homes in the Laurel Caynon area.

The house in 13 Ghosts was the Russell Judson Waters Mansion at 900 West Adams Boulevard in the West Adams District of Los Angeles, near the University of Southern California and a few miles southwest of downtown LA. It was demolished, I believe in the 1960's. Waters was a prominent banker and politician of the late 19th Century. Houses like this were mostly built around the 1880's and located in neighborhoods near downtown Los Angeles like Bunker Hill (completely bulldozed in the 1960's), the old Westlake District, or the West Adams district. There are no Victorian mansions within miles of Laurel Canyon, a hilly area near West Hollywood that was not developed residentially until the early 20th century, long after the Victorian era.
You can see a glimpse of the house facade in the 13 Ghosts trailer at youtube. The Waters mansion was also prominently featured in the 1944 film, "The Curse of the Cat People."

Yeah you're right. It was part of the old architecture of LA tour. The church built along side of it still standing and was one of the visits on the tour. According to the tour leader the house was torn down around the release of the movie in 1960. He also mentioned no great deal of care was put forth to preserve the house during filming as they were well aware of it's destiny. (I don't have proof to back that up). Also something worth noting, Victorian Homes were well suited for film crews and the lighting needed to support that. This is mainly due to Victorian homes having a standard Ceiling height of 13 feet instead of the standard 8 feet in modern houses. The reason for this was the lack of closets in most Victorians houses, and the need to house large and often times tall Wardrobes. This additional 5 feet of ceiling was enough to accommodate overhead lighting, while keeping it out of the view of the camera. Another way to verify that this house, or at least a house was used to film this movie is the fact that you do see ceilings in several scenes. Scenes where the focus of the scene is not a ceiling. In most studio movies you won't see this due to the general lack of ceilings on sets to accommodate that lighting mentioned earlier.

They built rooms to accommodate the furniture? Not a chance.

Turn off your air conditioning. When you are begging for a breath of air, think about how lovely it would be to have tall rooms with openings at the top that would release the hot air.

Then think about why old windows often opened up from the bottom or the top (or both at the same time), and why there were special little windows (transoms) on top of many windows and doors.

And they didn't build shotgun houses because the owners had long furniture.

Speaking of Martin Milner and the Munster's old house... I have been watching Adam 12 on Netflix and every now and then they drive by the Munster's house. There's a corner where there's a business facade and they filmed on that corner a lot. The Munster's house can sometimes be seen in the background. The Cleaver's house is right across the street if I remember correctly from the tour I took at Universal many years ago. When the show was only on once a week, it was not so noticeable but when you watch a few episodes in a row you can see they used the same sets for all of the neighborhoods and one house they filmed a lot was right next door to the Munster's house.
