Why Does Practically Everyone Loathe Gazoo So Much??

First off, an alien visitor to a prehistoric community is actually one of the LEAST far-fetched things about the Flintstones. Why should the existence of a civilization of technologically advanced aliens be any less plausible 10,000 years ago than it is today? How technologically advanced WE are has got nothing to do with how technologically advanced alien civilisations in other parts of the Universe are, whether they exist or not. Even so, the makers of the Flintstones episodes took care to have Gazoo coming to the Stone Age from the distant future. In any case, I fail to see how Gazoo can in any way be far-fetched in a Stone Age in which everyone possesses colour T.V.s and the countries of Sweden, Japan, England and Mexico all exist. You can almost be forgiven for not even realizing that the Flintstones is supposed to be set in prehistoric times when watching a good few episodes of the show.

Secondly, to my mind, the show jumped the shark at the beginning of the Fifth Season, when the episodes seemingly began to be made almost exclusively for children, and there was an endless parodying of popular culture. You had cringe-worthy moments such as when Dino, Hoppy, Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm donned Beatles wigs and screeched "Yeah! Yeah! Yeah!", and the "Time Machine" episode, in which the trips to the future are as puerile and uninspired as possible, and the Flintstone' and Rubble's experience of 1964 is limited to an inane argument with a vendor at a burger stand. You no longer had the Flintstones doing their own thing; instead, you had crude caricatures of 60s celebrities forever turning up, all of them immeasurably more incongruous than Gazoo. The episodes had also in a large part become tiresomely predictable (with gags and plot 'twists' which I could see coming from a long way off), and so I welcomed the originality which the kooky Gazoo brought to the table.

Finally, it is worth considering that Gazoo appeared in only ELEVEN episodes of the show, 148 episodes into the series and just 18 episodes before the Flintstones was cancelled!! Even then, he had very little screen time in some of the episodes in which he appeared - in the "Gravelberry Pie King" he is to be seen only for 30 seconds or so. How can a character who debuts when a show is all but over and who has such a paucity of screen time be continually cited as the reason for the Flintstones jumping the shark?

Now, I entirely understand that one man's meat is another man's poison. I think that Gazoo is hilarious and endearing and he is easily my favourite supporting character on the show. I wish that there was much more of him. Others may find him obnoxious. I would be interested to learn, however, why viewers detest him so much.

With you there. I can see why his voice, the late, but genius Harvey Korman (RIP 1927-2008) was not even mentioned in the "Gravelberry Pie" credits since Gazoo's only in there for a while.

His first was in the simply titled, "The Great Gazoo" [October 29,1965.]

Gazoo wasn't even seen in reruns, especially NBC (beginning in 1967) until 1970 or so, so since 1966 to 1971 viewers were spared of him. Loved his voice, kind of an understated Frank Nelson/Harold "The Great Gildersleeve" British voice.

There were actually TWELVE Gazoo's, including his debut and his semi-cameo in "The Gravelberry Pie King".

They were: Last on the list was also the last ever produced Flintstones, and also the next to last ever original broadcast [March 25,1966.]

01."The Great Gazoo"
02."Boss for a Day"
03."The Stonefinger Caper"
04."Curtain Call at Bedrock"
05."The Gravelberry Pie King
06.Two Men On a Dinosaur".
07."Seeing Doubles"
08."How to pick a Fight with your wife without really trying
09."Jealousy"
11."The Long, Long, Long. Weekend"
12."My Fair Freddy"

I certainly don't loathe Gazoo. I actually like the little Green Guy. The Gazoo episodes entertain me and I think there is much humor associated with him and Fred and Barney. But to each his or her own. I like all six seasons of the Flintstones. and I still watch it often.

While he never bothered me as much i love him, it seems that most real hate when it comes to Hanna Barbera, is that for certain people certain characters just annoyed the **** out of them. Great Gazoo being one of them, others being the likes of Scrappy Doo, Jabberjaw, Orbitty, etc. To some they are things to be hidden and others are to be cherished. Although to be fair to each of them, re-runs and sales seem to vindicate most of them as even with as much targeted hate as they got, did well enough.

However in general i don't think the Flintstones ever jumped the shark. And none o the things they added/lost ever really made me change from being a fan. Sure at times i wished the babies weren't around, but sometimes there were still adventures where they were written off or when Fred and Barney had more adventures in later spin offs.

However i do wish there could have been more Gazoo as well. Sad they never brought him back in a spin off or something. But at least we have re-runs if nothing else.

EDIT: Reading another thread got me thinking, is the lack of more Gazoo to blame on them not liking him or because Harvey Korman wasn't available? Since characters with far bigger haters seemed to have no problem being reused, kinda makes me curious.

Gazoo never bothered me. I still vividly remember when I saw his first appearance and what all was going on. I would see this in the seventies.

And without Gazoo, there wouldn't have been the futuristic episode which gave way for the Jetsons.

I think Gazoo and his 'dum-dum' bits did pave the way for the depiction that went down in the Gold Key comic books, where Wilma, Betty and Dino are just cruel toward Fred and in a certain way, Fred is rather childish toward them as well.
It's all rather like, why did you marry him then, lady?

I was very surprised at the hostility in those comic books when I saw them decades later.

But there were some heartfelt moments with Fred and Barney and Gazoo in the cartoon, I do recall.

I enjoyed The Great Gazoo in the cartoons and I'm sorry to say that I never read his Gold Key antics! Sigh! Maybe someday!

I'd have to look at the Gazoo books, but it was mostly in the Gold Key Flintstones books where things got definitely hostile toward Fred, even without Gazoo being present.

There were Flintstones comic books, Barney & Betty, Pebbles & Bamm Bamm (teen-aged from the cartoons), Dino and Gazoo.

I got a few Barney and Betty that definitely give way to the idea the artist was doing drugs and drawing the horror comic books of the time as well.

But in the Flintstone books, Wilma, Dino, everyone would snarl and get angry at Fred and call him a big dummy. It was an incredibly hostile book.

How can that be? Gazoo didn't appear on The Flintstones until years after The Jetsons premiered and was already cancelled.

@trollmatic

Hmmm, come to think of it, he could have been the bridging character to that "Flintstones meet the Jetsons" cartoon that was made years back instead of Elroy building a time machine!

reply

Gazoo sent them into the future before that special, but this being Hanna Barbera land, obviously they just all forgot when it was deemed necessary.

But in hindsight characters like the great gazoo are perfectly good scapegoats to excuse every single error, as honestly if that's all one world....it's time stream must be several shades of all screwed up with people time traveling and altering reality at least once per season.

I don't loathe him at all. His wiseass demeanor played off beautifully with Fred's loud mouth and tactless behavior. Too bad he was the last gasp of a dying series.

reply

I don't dislike him but his presence wasn't needed, the show was fine on its own and it was kind of childish that he was only visible to Fred and Barney.

I think season 6 had some excellent writing and Gazoo was involved in some of those great episodes so I am all for the little guy. Also he was voiced by Harvey Korman who was a very funny voice actor and added a lot of humour to the show.
