(SPOILER ALERT) The choice in the end is clear.

I own this title on Amazon Prime, as it is one of my favorite all time movies. I am a Black psychiatrist and independent filmmaker, so that my so-called race, along with my professions, not to mention Harry being my childhood alter ego, all combine to make this movie a great one for me as a study of race, society, and what could be “gotten away with” in filmmaking at a time when this country’s own apartheid was in the midst of being dismantled. People have said that the ending is a cop out. I respectfully disagree. Considering where this country was at the time the movie was first released, the ending is nothing but brilliant. I watched the last five minutes 3 times yesterday. It’s fairly clear that Inger/Sarah chooses Harry/Ralph. Two things communicate this, both subtle: One, Sarah’s look and conversation (“let me go with you”) and taking Ralph’s hand (this is technically more than two); second (and this takes close looking), in both the wide and medium shots of the three of them walking away, Sarah walks CLOSER to Ralph. Using THE BEGINNING as the fadeout underscores this.

Interesting perspective.

I think some of that must be your own take on it, though. The studio did mandate this ending due to what audiences would accept in 1959. the execs were, as today, avoiding real controversy. The studio is, after all, a business.

You must have led an interesting life to get where you are, with many barriers to overcome. I salute you.
