Lion Statues

In the scene where Belafonte is ringing the cathedral bell, we see several lion statues in several poses (as if they're reacting to the bell). I can't help but wonder how long it took the film crew to find those different statues in Manhattan.

I thought that was the most imaginative and amusing sequence in the whole movie.

Location scouts armed with studio research and assistance from the city probably located all the necessary lions within a day or two.

Hey folks,

I was never a devotee of New York City, but in the several visits I made there in the 1950s, I noticed a whole lot of different lion statues outside hotels, apartment houses, libraries, and museums. I would bet there were areas where you could find a set of concrete lions on every block.

Best wishes,

The segment with the lion statues is actually an homage to director Sergei Eisenstein's Battleship Potemkin, in which he does the same thing.

I remember the scene in Potemkin. I'm also thinking something similar occurred in yet another film, but right now it doesn't come to mind (it might not have involved lions).
