Where were all the fallout shelter people?
Presumably there would have been all those survivors staying in their fallout shelters that were such a craze back in the 1950s. There they would have had access to their battery-powered radios, which would have advised them on the safety of emerging from the shelters after a week or two. I guess they didn't work, given that only three survivors in the entire Western Hemisphere turned up.
Now that would be a big class action lawsuit against the shelter manufacturers.
