Belafonte great, cool scenes of deserted NYC

Good End of the World drama, only marred by a mediocre ending

Watching it now on TCM. I was struck also by the great shots of daytime deserted NYC. I've been trying to figure out how many post-apocalyptic movies were made in the 1950s. The Day the Earth Stood Still is one of my favorites but that's a warning-all-you-Earthlings flick so not really in that category.

Beautifully done! I remember how everyone marveled at "Vanilla Sky" with its one deserted Times Square shot. This movie has MANY scenes of deserted NYC, where you can see for blocks and blocks.
