Never cared much for him on Bonanza and never watched Trapper John. He was surprisingly good in this.

He and James Coburn did make a nice pair of likeable "rogues".

From what I've read, Bonanza producer David Dortort was sold on Pernell Roberts playing Adam Cartwright after seeing his performance in this movie.

SPOILER...

He was very good. I was rooting for him and his buddy James Coburn to survive Frank and the Indians and get a chance to start over and go straight on their ranch. Worked out great, and he even got the girl.
