On The Beach is not the best book ever written, but it's the best book I've ever read. The 1959 movie, whilst not perfect and with Hollywood-style artistic licence, which did not please author Nevil Shute, was an effective and sobering experience. The 2000 made-for- television, remake, had it's moments. If you want to be truly shocked, by a film about the aftermath of nuclear war, watch "Threads", a made-for-television movie, made in 1984.share
