The sailor who investigates the morse code radio signal is wearing a hazmat suit that ends in pants cuffs. Shouldn't the suit encompass everything including his shoes? It seems to me that radiation could sneak up his pants legs. Opinions?
There is no "off" position on the genius switch.
More correctly it's an "Anti-contamination" suit- keeping contaminated material-dust, dirt, and such off the wearer, and not an anti radiation suit. Booties/shoe covers taped to the pants would normally be part of any anti-C suit. So chalk it up to a "goof". Note that in the book and I believe the movie Captain Towers says "The only thing I want back on board is you...naked...". The suit, his shoes and likely any clothing worn likely didn't come back into the living space of the sub.
