Doomsday Movies

I am fascinated by this topic. How many doomsday movies can you name?

On the Beach
The Stand
The Day After Tomorrow
2012
Panic in Year Zero!

The Day After (1983)

Fail Safe
Dr, Strangelove
Earth v the Flying Saucers
When Worlds Collide

The list from the 1950s alone is a long one. In the 1950s, most of those who weren't alive then fail to comprehend that many of the alien invasion movies were allegories for the 'Red Menace,' a film genre that survived through the 1980s with such ludicrous films as Red Dawn.

I haven't seen a few of these. Thanks!

You could add "Miracle Mile" to the list, although personally I found this one to be pretty awful.
OTOH "By Dawn's Early Light" was well done, and a decent take on how a nuclear war could easily start and escalate, "when things get out of control".

Don't Forget:

The Road (2009) - More post Apocalyptic, but pretty Doomsdayish to me. Oh, & very dark & Bleak.

If your interested do a search for post apocalyptic films on google, theres loads of em :)

A couple from the 50's these being "Five" (1951) as well as "Invasion USA" (1952) clips & trailer of which can be seen on youtube.
And one from the 60's-Try 1964's "The Earth Dies Screaming"-Enjoy! (Maybe not quite the right word!)

reply

There's the "World The Flesh and the Devil" (1959) which was similar to "Five".

There was the ultra depressing movie "Testament".

"A Boy and His Dog" which is strange, but certainly post apocalyptic.

"The Book of Eli".

"Panic in the Year Zero" and "This is not A Test" from the early sixties if no one has listed them yet.

The original "Red Dawn" (1984) about a Soviet invasion after Washington DC and other command and control centers have been nuked off camera.

"Damnation Alley" which addresses such post nuclear threats as man eating giant cockroaches.

"Captive Women" from the early fifties about tribes fighting it out in the ruins of New York City a thousand years after a nuclear war. It was original untitled "Three Thousand AD" but after Howard Hughes bought the US rights to the British film it got its more suggestive title.

"Teenage Caveman" about survival generations after the nukes had been used.

The first movie to attempt to depict the after effects of a nuclear weapons was "Rocket Ship XM" of course in that case the war had taken place on the planet Mars.

If you into things that are really strange or happen to be a unreconstructed Rowdy Rodney Piper fan there is "Hell Comes to Frog Town" with the eighties pro wrestler as one of the few fertile men alive after the bomb drops. It is definitely not a movie to be taken seriously but those mutant frogs are a real hoot.

I liked the "nuclear apocalypse" B movies from the 50s, especially those with mutants. Sir Graves (detroit) played them during the 60s.

The giant ants one is classic, but I can't recall the names of any with mutant humans. One image I remember is mutants with huge eyeballs.

The Day After
This is Not a Test!
By Dawn's Early Light
Twilight's Last Gleaming
Panic in the Year Zero
Control (okay, not actually Doomsday but it's close)

I have a whole pack of the Apocalypse/Doomsday movies but the only one of them I can remember IS This is Not a Test!, which for all it's vintage cheesiness by today's standards, the ending of it STILL freaked the hell out of me. It's just *cringes*.

The most numbing and bleak nuclear holocaust film I've viewed.

The 1961 Toho produced film, "The Last War" (which almost works as an OTB prequel if you use your imagination just a little. The Japanese filmmakers were clearly ripping it off when they came up with their own ending).

The Quiet Earth (1985) is a really interesting end of the world movie from New Zealand. The ending is just shattering.

I saw "The Quiet Earth" when it first came out. The only part I remember is the amazing ending. You can't forget that.

Someone else mentioned "The Last Wave," which is Australian. I don't know if it implied the end of the world, or just Australia. I love that movie. It has a great ending too.

An American movie that depicts Armageddon is "The Rapture." It is very strange.

A lot of the movies mentioned in this thread aren't doomsday per se, i.e. the world goes on and humans survive.

One not mentioned was Beneath the Planet of the Apes. Taylor blows the world up at the end.

"The Day The World Ended" is one of my favorites. :-)
